You
won't get a second chance to make a good first impression!
Get it right the first time!
Self
written / self crafted resumés are a dime a dozen
and the job hunters biggest roadblock.
Don't
let a poorly written resumé or CV keep you from the
job of your dreams.
You
could very well be the most qualified person for the job, with
the best work record, highest education, the most talent and
the sharpest problem solving skills.
No doubt
you are determined in your resolve to earn your pay and do a
good job. To get hired, you have to do one thing; convince a
recruiter to call you in above all others.
What is your game plan to make this happen?
- Your
years of experience?
- Your
education?
- Your
charm and personality?
- Your loyalty?
Dedication?
- Some type of resumé
or CV "blaster site " that will
magically open doors for you?
- The worst
resumés we've seen came from people with years of education.
- People
with years of valuable work experience get bogged down in
the technical aspects of their jobs. They ramble on and never
answer the 2 questions all employers want to know from the
start - "What can you do for me and why should I hire
you?"
- Some
of you will not even get your foot in the door because you
come across as being timid, shy and not having confidence
in yourself or you present yourself
as the complete opposite - a know it all.
- Resumé
and CV "blasting sites" are nothing
more than SPAM generators and will get your application trashed
faster than anything else you can do.
- The truth
is you are qualified, experienced, highly competent, intelligent,
quite capable and enthusiastic about getting the most demanding
of jobs done. All you need is the right direction to go in
and a chance to prove your self...
Most
people do not possess good writing skills.
More likely than not this includes you. Regardless of your education,
experience, personal background, dedication, how organized you
are, how hard you work or what a great person you are, the odds
are stacked against you when it comes to SELLING yourself using
the written word and the internet.
AND THAT'S
NOT ALL...
There are
two tasks which much be successfully accomplished here. Slack
in either will shut you down.
- What
you write
- How you
send it
We have
already discussed the fact that most people do not possess good
writing skills. That is one part of the problem. The other is
delivery.
How do you
know what you send is even being opened? How much of a shocker
would it be for you to discover the dozens or even hundreds
of resumés or CV's you spent numerous hours and / or
$$ to send out never got opened?
TWO THINGS
TO CHECK...
Once you
are sure your resumé is a WINNER and not a LEMON in the
writing department the next hurdle you will face is how you
send it out. The online electronic delivery process is not as
easy as most people think and causes much grief to the unwary
job seeker.
1).
The virus threat is a real and present danger
to any business using the internet. Because of this, many companies
have standing policies NOT to open attachments (which is what
85% of job seekers use) under any conditions. Some employers
are now refusing to accept ANY type of e-resumés, they
will only accept faxes and / or hard copies. Here are two examples
of letters offshore and maritime job seekers have been receiving:
- "As
a security measure our system cannot receive executable files
and / or programs directed to the e-mail addresses of individuals.
Since your mail contains an attachment of one of the above
types, it has been intercepted and not delivered."
- "Your
EMail with the subject [resumé Document], contains
a file attachment of type [.doc]. Our organization does not
accept files of this type by email. The message has NOT been
delivered to the recipients."

It very
well could be the resumé or CV you have faithfully been
sending out might not be getting the exposure you think it is
getting. Not all computers are the same and not all software
works the same.
- First,
there are the attachment filters to contend with
- Next
there is the opening problem
2).
When
you view your resumé or CV it looks fine. When you send
it to a trusted friend so they can have a look, it looks fine.
If you have the experience but are not getting any offers you
might be sending something which ends up looking like this
or this?
You do realize recruiters are not going to write back and make
you aware of this problem?
The first
resumé came from an offshore crane operator and
the second is from a maritime engineer with many years
of offshore experience. Scroll down either resumé and
you can pick it out. Both positions are in high demand offshore
right now. Guess what? No recruiter is going to decipher this.
More than likely they are going think "Gee, what a mess
this is" and go on to the next resumé.
Here are
letters from surprised offshore / maritime job seekers who found
out the hard way why they were not getting any job offers:
Ron,
I
sincerely appreciate you reviewing my resumé
and letting me know about the problem opening it. That
would explain why I have not had any contact with offshore
employers in the last two months.

Captain
Ron,
My husband has been looking for offshore employment
for the past 10 months. At every chance we got
we sent out applications with the resumé as a
.doc attachment. We very rarely got a reply. You
can imagine our amazement when you told us the attachment
did not open! Most of the resumés we sent out,
100 plus of them, were sent to the recycle bin
and we did not even know it!
We now use your online
resumé and yes we have had replies,
not robot mail, but actual job offers!!!!! Thank
you Ron for all your help. Your online resumé
really works, and it is nice to know they open every
time all the time and don't end up in the trash.
Well
it has finally happened. Paul got a job as a Driller
in Oman with Nabors.Yes we sent them your resumé
via email a few months ago. They rang in January and
offered him the position and he flew out of here last
week.

Don't
let this happen to you!
We
have a way for you to physically see if you resumé was
opened or not, regardless to who you send it to. This is not
the standard message confirming in your email program, but a
piece of invisible code. What would something like this be worth
to your job search efforts?
Job
availability for offshore / maritime jobs is at an all time
high. If you have prior experience, there is no reason for you
not to be working at the job of your choice and in the salary
range you want. For you new starts with no previous experience
- the jobs are out there. If you are not working it is not due
to a lack of jobs.
We
do hope we opened your eyes as to why you might not be receiving
what you would consider an acceptable number of job offers based
on your background. If you have prior experience and live in
the US, you should be getting 2 to 5 responses from real humans
for every 10 resumés you send out.
If
you live outside the US or Canada and / or have no prior offshore
or maritime experience, your response numbers would be significantly
less. However, if you send out 35 or more resumés or
CV's and get no response, something is wrong with what you have
written or wrong with your delivery.
This
is our point: If
you are not happy with the results you are getting from your
job search, STOP what you are doing and HAVE A LOOK at what
you are doing before you muck it up any more. It is doing you
no good to kick a dead horse.
If
you have any doubt as to the effectiveness of your current resumé
or CV, then by all means send it in for a Professional
Critique. This is not something you want to put
off doing even one day. There are two important points of instruction
here. If you want to maximize your job search efforts, you will
give heed to them both:
- You
are sure the written part of your resumé
is a
winner and not a lemon.
- You are
sure your resumé is opening when you send it out.
To
compensate for these problems and to provide you with the superior
competitive edge you need online these days, we recommend using
our professional writing skills to create for you a Personal
Web Page Resumé.
- Have
the peace of mind in knowing you are presenting yourself at
your very best
- Have
the peace of mind in knowing your resumé
will open every time - all the time.
Creating
a winning resumé involves more than going to Office Depot,
Office Max, etc., or some online website and buying resumé
building software. Resumés
are not built, resumés are written. For best results they
need to be written by a person. Nothing
will out perform a resumé written specifically for you
by one of our professional human writers.
- A small
number of you have excellent resumés and are good to
go. For current and reliable contacts of hundreds of offshore
/ maritime jobs, we recommend Direct
Access.
- Some
of you will copy resumés or parts of resumés
from this site or other sites, paste in your particulars and
consider this adequate.
- Some
of you spent a great deal of time and effort in writing your
own resumé and think this equals adequate.
- Some
of you have already paid someone to write you a resumé.
- If you
think the resumé you are using is good enough to get
the job done, then by all means use it.
- We are
not telling you this to beat you down in the hopes you will
buy something from us.
We are telling
you this because it is the correct information and will get
you going in the right direction. The offshore / maritime industry
is short handed. The jobs are there, and they are there in large
numbers. If a recruiter thinks you are a good candidate for
an open vacancy, he or she will hire you, no matter how bad
your resumé is.
But...
- If you
are sending your resumé to posted vacancies you are
qualified to fill.
- And you
are not getting any action.
- The
only place the problem can be is in your resumé.
- It is
either poorly written or it is not opening on the other end.
Employers
give higher ratings to applicants who use professionally written
resumés!
What makes
your resumé stand out above all others is the ability
of you to communicate to the recruiter you are the best candidate
for the job.
- Can you
sell yourself in this manner using the written word?
- Are
you sure?
- Do you
want to risk losing even one interview because your resumé
needs work but you thought it would be OK?
- It looks
much easier than it is.

Hello
Ron,
I
was so exited when I received my first draft, I thought
I would send it out to a few companies and see what
happened. Today I got a call from Transocean. They want
me to come in for an interview.
Thanks again for your help,
