Engineering / Construction companies play a major part
in the industry. Once a substantial field is found by an oil company, a platform has to be erected to drill wells to get the oil to the
surface. Once it is on the surface, an underwater pipeline has to be
laid to get the oil to the shore where it can be processed in a refinery.
As you can imagine, the planning, engineer, fabrication and erection of
this infrastructure is quite involved.
Even then it is not over with, as these facilities have
to be maintained on a continuous basis, which requires a lot of
work in the replacement of replacement of rusted / corroded parts,
lots of blasting / painting, maintenance / repair / replacement of
mechanical / electrical equipment, updates of outdated equipment, and
the list goes on.
Work schedules in the engineering / construction sector
varies from company to company, job to job. Some of the jobs are land
based only, some are land based with visits to offshore sites, some are
strictly offshore. Of the offshore jobs, some are on a rotating
schedule, others are till the jobs is finished. It just depends. Below
